In this Special Issue, we present a series of papers on a collaborative, nationwide effort by cancer researchers and practitioners in federal agencies, public health departments, research centers, medical practices, advocacy groups, and other settings to develop and implement a comprehensive approach to cancer prevention and control. This approach evolved from efforts by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Cancer Institute, the American Cancer Society, and other national, state, and local organizations to reduce the cancer burden by collaborating more effectively in bringing research findings into practice in local communities. We have found that the use of evidence-based cancer prevention and control strategies, including increased access to health services, can have a major impact in the United States, but that potential has been largely unfulfilled because these practices have not been adequately implemented in many communities, particularly in those with the greatest disease burden. The idea for this Special Issue originated at a conference on Comprehensive Approaches to Cancer Control – The Public Health Role held in Atlanta, September, 2003. The papers describe a number of aspects of this collaborative, comprehensive approach, from research evaluation, synthesis, recommendations, and dissemination, to the use of cancer surveillance data to motivate community action and evaluate community efforts, to specific issues related to disparities and cancer survivorship. The papers describe efforts by cancer control coalitions in states, tribes, and territories to assess resources and priorities and develop and implement comprehensive cancer control plans. They also summarize efforts by national partners to support those efforts. Articles summarize background information on these approaches, efforts undertaken, successes in implementation, barriers to success, and issues that should be addressed next. These articles pose the opportunity for journal readers, both researchers and practitioners, to help direct and implement this collaborative nationwide effort to fulfill the promise of cancer prevention and control across all US communities.
