An improved device has been developed for measuring the tangential expandability of cladding tubes, especially in beryllium, which is important since the difference in thermal expansion coefficient between Be and UO2 will cause stress, and bring about tangential elongation of the cladding at temperatures below 250°C every time the reactor is shutdown. Two new devices were developed, and upon comparison, the better method was found to be that incorporating a cylindrical lead plastically deforming insert of length best suited to the specimen length. This apparatus can produce in the be cladding a uniaxial tangential tensile stress tending to expand the tube diameter, reproducing the conditions prevailing in the case of actual reactor, shutdown. Preliminary test results on Al and Magnox tubes, and a first account of the results obtained on Be tube fabricated through various processes are given.
