In a recent review of the bainite reaction in steel, other authors recounted structural and kinetic features of the proeutectoid ferrite, bainite and lath martensite transformations which suggest that all of them are a part of a single, unified sequence evolving with increasing driving force. At the end of the paper they invited ''constructive debate'' about their conclusions. Introduction of this response to their invitation may be usefully accomplished by noting immediately our basic points of agreement and of disagreement. With respect to the former, the authors agree with Purdy and Hillert, as well as with a number of other colleagues that proeutectoid ferrite, upper bainite and lower bainite are part of a continuum of microstructural development with important commonalities. They also agree that none of these reactions can occur more rapidly than volume diffusion-control allows. However, there is a significant substructure of differences with respect to the details underlying both of these areas of agreement. And they do not accept any fundamental continuity between lower bainite and martensite. At the end of the discussion, another viewpoint on these matters is presented.
