BackgroundThe Central Brain Tumor Registry of the United States (CBTRUS) is a unique professional research organization that focuses exclusively on providing quality statistical data on population-based primary brain and CNS incident tumors in the United States. CBTRUS is currently the only population-based site-specific registry in the United States that works in partnership with a public surveillance organization, the National Program of Central Registries (NPCR), and from which data are directly received under a special agreement. This agreement permits transfer of data through the NPCR-CSS Submission Specifications mechanism, 1 the system utilized for collection of central (state) cancer data as mandated in 1992 by Public Law 102-515, the Cancer Registries Amendment Act. 2 CBTRUS combines the NPCR data with data from the SEER program 3 which was established for national cancer surveillance in the early 1970s. Working with these premier surveillance organizations enables CBTRUS to report high quality data on brain and CNS tumors that are useful to the communities it serves.
