Both novice and seasoned researchers are often faced with the problem of responding to grant review critiques. A great deal of information is available about how to develop a grant application, but there is little available about effective responses to reviewer critiques and the process of reshaping and resubmitting the application. Once a grant is funded, a request can be made to the principal investigator or funding agency to share copies of the grant. Unfortunately, funding agencies are not able to share critiques (Naylor, 1990), and principal investigators may be unwilling to share them. Therefore, only limited views of revised grant applications, both in terms of process and reshaping of content, are possible. The purpose of this article is to share our experiences, from initial grant application to resubmission, with a project that was recently funded by the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR), National Institutes of Health (NIH).On February 1, 1994, our investigative team submitted a grant application," Breastfeeding Services for Low-Birth-Weight (LBW) Infants-Outcomes and Costs," to the NINR at NIH. This initial grant, consuming more than 9 months of planning, writing, and refining by the investigative team and supporting colleagues, earned a priority score of 224 (percentile of 19.3), indicating a strong potential for funding if appropriately revised. The goals for the revision were:(a) to address all reviewer comments;(b) where appropriate and possible, to refine areas of the grant not identified in the critique; and (c) to bring the score to below the 10th percentile. In an effort to share with colleagues the team's thinking about the actual revisions, we have selected several critique items from components of the research plan. The selected items are presented in the grant application format. In each section, the original content is given, followed by the revision for the resubmission.
