Red cells from the patient''s defibrinated blood were washed, suspended in 0.9% NaCl, and added to serum whose pH had been adjusted by acid or alkali in 0.9% NaCl. The optimum pH for hemolysis was observed in 2 cases to be about 7.2, with inhibition above pH 8 and below pH 6. This pH range was more restricted, particularly on the alkaline side, than that seen when sheep or horse cells were hemolysed by human heterolysin and complement or when normal human cells were hemolysed by iso-hemolysin and complement.
