The author discusses the problems of interpretation presented by the rapid communication of Hill, Han and Elkind (Int. J. Radiat. Biol., 1984,46,11-15) 'Fission-spectrum neutrons at low dose rate enhance neoplastic transformation in the linear low dose region (0-10 cGy)', and disputes the simple interpretation of a linear dependence of the frequency of radiation effects in single cells on the dose, provided by the assumption that the endpoint is caused by single tracks of ionizing particles. He points out that this interpretation is inconsistent with the observation of a dose rate effect at low doses of high l.e.t. radiation, and discusses other explanations of this effect.
