1N-acetylspermidine, 1N-acetylspermine and 1N,12N-diacetylspermine have lower Km and higher Vmax values than spermine and spermidine and are better substrates of [rat liver] polyamine oxidase than the non-acetylated polyamines. Polyamine oxidase splits these acetylderivatives to 3-acetamidopropanal and putrescine and spermidine, respectively. Thus, the acetylation and subsequent oxidation of the polyamines must be considered to be a major catabolic fate of these compounds. previously described deacetylation and excretion together with oxidative degradation of acetylated polyamines are presumed to be vital metabolic reactions intimately involved in polyamine functions.
