Accumulating evidence has demonstrated that a strong causal link exists between psychological stress and thrombotic diseases as well as hypertension [1]. Because of substantial overlap between thrombosis and hypertension in etiology, stress-related disorders would be a potential therapeutic target in the prevention of thrombosis in hypertensive patients. The angiotensin II antagonist irbesartan is the antihypertensive drug that possesses higher affinity for CC chemokine receptor type 2 (CCR2) based on molecular modeling, and inhibits monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) production via the nuclear factorkappa B (NFкB) pathway [2]. The ACTIVE-I trial suggested the possibility that irbesartan treatment reduced thromboembolic events in hypertensive patients [3]. Although it is anticipated that irbesartan exerts beneficial effects on the coagulation and fibrinolytic systems, which are regarded to be independent of blood pressure-lowering action, it has been undetermined whether irbesartan improves the stress-induced prothrombotic state.
