This article describes the use of a medium in identifying Verticillium albo-atrum and Verticillium dahliae. The medium contains concentrated prune extract 100 milliliter, lactose five grams, Difco yeast extract one gram, agar 30 grams, and distilled water to make up 1,000 milliliter. The potential of hydrogen of the medium is adjusted to 5.8-6.0. Verticillate conidiophores of both species are usually apparent within three to four days. Microsclerotia of Verticillium dahliae begin to develop about five days after inoculation of the plate, and though they are not usually visible to the naked eye at this stage, the lateral budding of the hyphae can easily be seen under the microscope. The macroscopic appearance of the underside of the Verticillium albo-atrum colony is characteristically fibrous and quite distinct from the gritty appearance of Verticillium dahliae, even to the naked eye.
