The unlearning assumption is an oversimplification, however. It is easy to show that extinction does not depend on it. Even after fairly extensive extinction, substantial recovery of an extinguished response can occur. Unlearning may not happen at all in extinction. Instead, the signal takes on a second meaning. lt be-comes ambiguous, and the response it evokes therefore depends on which meaning the current context retrieves.
