Examined the extent to which skin conductance and heart rate indices differentiated between responses to direct adverse stimulation and observing another experiencing the adverse stimulation (tolerating immersion of the hand in a-4–C brine solution). 48 male and female undergraduates served as Ss. Differential patterns of autonomic response appeared. Both experiences produced increases in skin conductance. The direct experience produced acceleration of heart rate, whereas the vicarious experience tended to produce deceleration. Sequence of experiences and degree of stress were related to the heart rate.(French summary)(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
