THE CHALCIDOIDEA IS a huge superfamily of parasitic wasps numbering tens of thousands of species worldwide. Their importance in biological control is preeminent, because many species have been used as successful agents against pest species, particularly those associated with intensive agriculture and horticulture. Also, a few species are pests in their own right, feeding on seeds, forming galls, or parasitizing beneficial insects. Because of their often tiny size and species richness, chalcidoids pose huge taxonomic problems for the specialist and non-specialist alike. In the past, literature available to identify chalcidoids from all regions except the Australasian has been scattered and largely inadequate. Although keys have been available to identify chalcidoids to family level for North America (eg, Grissel, EE and ME Schauff
