Reciprocal-removal experiments were conducted to test for the occurrence and consequences of interspecific competition between the rodents Mus musculus and Peromyscus leucopus on a large Virginia barrier island (USA). Habitat use and population density of each species were monitored during pre- and post-removal periods. The species exhibited conspicuous differences in pre-removal habitat use, with Mus occupying grassland and peromyscus occupying adjacent shrub thickets
