To the Editor: Serum ferritin levels are increased in many disease conditions, including iron overload, hepatic inflammation or damage, and malignant disorders, such as Hodgkin's disease, 1 neuroblastoma, 2 leukemia, 3 and other cancers. 4 In 1984, Andreesen et al. 5 demonstrated that intracellular levels of ferritin increased about 100-fold during the maturation of monocytes into macrophages in vitro. Worwood et al. 6 reported that cultured mononuclear cells that were maintained in iron-containing medium or were in the process of phagocytizing red cells rapidly accumulated ferritin, suggesting that phagocytic cells may be an important source of serum ferritin.
