Hexaploid, 2n=42, and polyhaploid, 2n=21, Agropyron intermedium derived from twin seedlings were analyzed cytologically to determine the genome structure of this species. Hexa-ploid A. intermedium regularly formed 21 bivalents at metaphase I, but occasional quadrivalent, trivalent, and univalent associations were also observed. Meiosis in the polyhaploid plant was highly irregular and was typified by univalents, laggards, bridges, and fragments and by the omission of several meiotic stages. Chromosome associations at metaphase I in the polyhaploid averaged 14.5 univalents, 3.1 bivalents, and 0.1 trivalents per cell. Chromosome pairing relations in the hexa-ploid and polyploid plants indicate that A. intermedium is a segmental autoallohexaploid and may be represented by a genome formula of A1A1A2A2BB.
