It has been observed that in South Wales, 20% of babies are breast-fed at 10 days vs. 6% at 3 months. Reasons for this marked decline in breast feeding in the early months after birth are discussed with reference to a survey of 32 women who gave up breast feeding shortly after leaving hospital. The most common reason was a belief that they were producing insufficient milk. In these cases supplementary feeds were given with a result that breast feeding stopped within 2 wk. The importance of the suckling stimulus in the maintenance of lactation is stressed; this stimulus is reduced if the baby's hunger is satisified by other feeds. Complementary feeding of breast-fed babies should therefore be discouraged.
