The active factor in the press juice of green rye seedlings, which has a strong antifungal activity, goes into ether quantitatively after mild acidification. It was isolated in pure form and established as 2(3)-benzoxazolinone. The antifungal effect of the ether extract againstFusarium nivaleandSclerotinia trifoliorumclosely corresponds to its benzoxazolinone content. On the basis of this fact and paper chromatography investigations, the antifungal effect of rye depends, mainly at least, on its benzoxazolinone content. An antifungal factor was isolated from young wheat and maize plants. Its structure was established as 6-methoxy-2(3)-benzoxazolinone. This structure was confirmed by synthesis. The antifungal effect of benzoxazolinone and its methoxy derivative is practically the same.Antifungal factors were isolated from alfalfa and red clover. The active substance in red clover was purified. It is an aromatic phenol with a molecular weight of about 300 and does not contain nitrogen. In potato leaves, chlorogenic acid was found to occur in so high a concentration that it inhibits late blight (Phytophthora infestans) at least in the resistant variety Aquila. An antifungal activity was found even in all other cultivated plants investigated in our laboratory.
