Monactin C41H66O12, dinactin C42H88O12 and trinactin C43H70O12 have been isolated from the mother liquors of the Streptomyces metabolite nonactin C40H64O12 2). These compounds are macrocyclic tetralactones ("macrotetrolides") I of optically active nonactic and homononactic acids. The structure III (R = CH3, R'' = H) determined for homononactic acid C11H20O4 from spectral data and degradation experiments, shows a close relationship to the structure III (R= R'' -=H) of the known nonactic acid C10H1O 4 2). Monactin is built up from 2(-)-nonactic acids, 1 (+)-nonactic acid and 1 (+)-honmnonor actic acid; dinactin from 2(-)-nonactin acids and 2 (+)-homononactic acids trinactin from 1 (-)-nonaetic acid, l(-)-homononactic acid and 2 (+)-homononactic acids.
