Fumazone (Nemagon, 1,2-dibromo-3-chloropropane, DBCP) is a soil fumigant used to control nematode infestation in crops. It was reported to be mutagenic with Salmonella typhimurium TA1530 but not with TA1538 (ROSENKRANZ 1975) and carcinogenic in both the rat and mouse (OLSON et al. 1973). A 90 day feeding study with rats showed a retarded weight gain in females at 150 ppm and in males at 450 ppm (TORKELSON et al. 1961). Gonadotropic effects are attributable to DBCP in both male and female rats (TORKELSON et al. 1961, RAKHMATULLAEV 1971). Radishes and carrots have been reported to absorb DBCP from the soil while cooking reduced the residues of DBCP by two-thirds of the initial concentration (NEWSOME et al. 1977).
