Examined data on 53 individuals who participated in a research program that offered presymptomatic genetic testing to adults at 50% risk for developing Huntington's disease (HD). The aim is to determine (1) psychiatric, psychological, and social consequences of informing people of their HD genetic status,(2) whether pretest characteristics can discriminate those who adapt well or poorly to their status, and (3) whether interventions can mitigate morbid psychological and social outcomes. Nine Ss who eventually tested positive for the HD marker reported greater psychological distress on 5 out of 9 scales of the SCL-90 (Revised) than the 29 Ss who later tested negative, suggesting that the HD gene may have subclinical manifestations. Psychological and social outcomes from disclosure of marker status and ethical implications of genetic testing are discussed.(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
