Dr Hariri is an associate professor in the Department of Pathology at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School. She is a physician-scientist whose research laboratory focuses on high-resolution optical imaging for assessment of pulmonary disease, such as interstitial lung disease. She is a member of the Fleischner Society, a fellow of the American Thoracic Society and the College of American Pathologists, and serves on NIH study sections.The importance of consistent, common, well-vetted terminology with clear, understandable definitions to describe disease cannot be overstated. Radiology and pathology share similarities in their roles in patient care, with both disciplines relying on the use of qualitative, descriptive features to define disease diagnosis, stage, and/or prognosis. Despite efforts to create consistency within and between the respective fields, both radiology and pathology have high interobserver variability regarding some descriptive terms and definitions (1, 2). When discussing potential solutions to this problem, emphasis is often placed on the use of a unifying term to describe a given feature and provide a common lexicon. Whereas unified terminology is crucial to consistency among practitioners, the terms themselves are useless without a welldescribed and well-accepted understanding of the precise meaning of any given term.
