Despite recent advances in the treatment of hyper-tension, it remains a great burden. Almost one-half of the adults have hypertension, and an estimated 1.4 billion people have hypertension worldwide but only 1 in 4 patients have their blood pressure under control. 1 This disease represents a major risk factor for stroke, myocardial infarction, heart failure, and kidney disease. Nearly 1 in 5 people with high blood pressure have kidney disease, and hypertension is the second leading cause of kidney failure in the United States. 2 There is an urgent need for new therapies, which can reduce hypertensive kidney disease. Understanding the specific molecular pathological mechanisms can help to develop new therapies for treatment of this devastating disease.
