The causes of geogr. variation and the probable course of speciation in the white-footed mice (Peromyscus) are discussed. Geogr. variation is attributed to mutations, selection by the environment and reduced gene flow through partial isolation of segments of the sp. population. The patterns of distr. of P. leucopus and P. polionotus are discussed. Geogr. races are considered ecological phenomena. The possible course of speciation in 4 cenospecies, leucopus, maniculatus, truei and boylii, is discussed. New spp. appear to have originated at the periphery of the range of the parent sp., on coastal islands and probably on isolated mountain ranges. No marked change in habitat preference has accompanied speciation in Peromyscus. Opposite ends of chains of races have differentiated morphologically and in habitat preference, and intrinsic isolating mechanisms have possibly developed between some of these end populations. Extinction of intermediate populations would complete speciation in this case. Geogr. variation favors survival and evolution of the sp. but is not required for the splitting off of a new sp.
