A new non-destructive testing technique that is able to detect and observe the presence of corrosion of steel beneath thick layers of paints and insulating layers using passive millimetre wave imaging is described. The oil, gas and chemical processing industries have an urgent requirement for a solution to the problems resulting from corrosion under paint and corrosion under insulation. The phenomenology behind the technique exploits the complex transmission, reflection and emissive contrast mechanisms to provide contrast in imagery to directly observe corrosion through the covering layers. A new camera has been developed. It operates at 250GHz achieving at a rate of three images per second with a spatial resolution of 1cm at a distance of one metre. An NETD of one Kelvin is achieved in real time. It is able to successful detect corrosion under many of the protective coating and insulations commonly used within the oil, gas and chemical processing industries.
