Those who teach about bacteria and those who are taught, as well as those who seek to name new bacteria or who seek to redress the nomenclatural indignities imposed upon a species, need an authority on the rules of nomenclature. This book is the authority from the date of publication 1 January 1976 and will remain so through the critical time ahead when “... all names published prior to 1 January1980 and included in the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names of the ICSB shall be treated for all nomenclatural purposes as though they had been validly published for the first time on that date, the existing types being retained”(Rule 24a). The old date from which all priorities were determined was 1 May 1753, and it must be admitted that the aspect and scope of biology have changed more than a little in the intervening 2.25 centuries. The new Bacteriological Code (1976 Revision), which is how it must be cited, cannot pretend to be complete and satisfactory in responding to the needs. of either bacteria or bacteriologists. It is the version that was approved at the First Congress for Bacteriology, Jerusalem, 1973. It presents in three chapters the “General Considerations,”“Principles,”“Rules of Nomenclature with Recommendations” that are the formal Code. There is no doubt of the greater clarity of definition and expression that has been attained in this version thanks to untiring efforts of the Drafting Committee (S. P. Lapage, Chairman) and the constant critical input from the Judicial Commission (PH A. Sneath, Chairman) and the parent International Committee on Systematic Bacteriology (V. B. D. Skerman, Chairman) of the IAMS.
