It is suggested that in hyaline-membrane disease the underlying cause is disseminated intravascular coagulation. Maternal events such as toxaemia, cxsarian section, and diabetes, especially where clotting is involved, can prove lethal to the infant. This hypothesis leads to a number of riders involving clotting factors and the prevention of hyaline-membrane disease in the at-risk infant by treatment with heparin.
