Since Kempe in 1962 first catalysed concern about child abuse, much effort has been expended to protect the lives of abused children and to help the parents. It has been found that many physically abused children can safely be returned to their parents following foster placements for the child and intensive intervention for the parents. But even though the repetition of serious physical injury may be prevented, data from the present follow‐up study of 50 abused children points to the pervasive psychic injury that continues.
