I N A previous paper by Stuart and Banta (1931) it was shown that under certain experimental conditions a definite ratio existed between the number of males produced by crowded Moina mothers and the number of viable bacteria present in the medium in which the mothers were reared. In these experiments crowded Moina mothers were cultured in clear, paper filtrates of dilute manure infusions bacterized with varying amounts of a suspension of A ~robacter ai3rogenes. The number of males produced by these mothers paralleled very closely the number of viable bacteria present in the various culture bottles. An adequate number of bacteria being present, approximately one billion per milliliter, mothers produced only female young. As the number of bacteria was decreased in a series of bottles, males were produced, the percentage of males being in direct proportion to the decrease in the bacterial count of the medium. In several experiments the numbers of bacteria in the filtrate were reduced to the point where Moina mothers produced
