This chapter focuses on the implications of information and communications technologies (ICTs) and uses primarily North American examples. It describes how: (1) structural and functional changes in the metropolitan economy have placed greater reliance on the quality and accessibility of information needed by corporate and public decision makers; (2) technological changes have alter the ways that information needs are met; (3) firms have changed their organizational structures and locational patterns; (4) new locational and functional relationships between the home and workplace have developed; (5) the nature of the work task controls the extent to which communications may be substituted for transportation; and (6) the transportation—communication relationship poses general planning and policy issues for cities and their metropolitan regions. Before considering these matters, it is useful to develop a conceptual framework that relates the structure and function of urban regions to changes in the significance of distance brought about by the technological and social innovations of the information society.
