The author studied the population of an area on the west coast of Sweden for the frequency and other demographic features of senile and arteriosclerotic psychosis, making both a transverse and period study, and reckoning only with cases having reached the stage of unremitting disorientation as to time and place. The area investigated is typical of rural Sweden today, having lost many of its inhabitants, particularly in the young age groups, during the 20th century. The underlying population for the study consisted of its 4,198 inhabitants aged 60 and over (2,071 men and 2,127 women). The prevalence and incidence of the two forms of psychosis were calculated. The cases found were studied for mortality, duration of disease, length of stays in hospitals for physical disease, and place of residence. Finally a genetic analysis was made of the two diseases.
