A dentifrice is a substance used with a toothbrush to clean the accessible surfaces of the teeth so as to provide one or more of the following effects [Volpe, 1977]:(1) primarily cosmetic, including cleaning, polishing and breath freshening;(2) cosme tic-therapeutic, through the efficient physi cal-mechanical removal of dental plaque, and (3) therapeutic or pharmacological by means of conveying a drug substance to the tooth surfaces or to the tooth environment. This definition includes the liquid and pow der forms, but the paste form, commonly re ferred to as toothpaste, is the predominating form.In fluoride dentifrices, the presence of fluoride in an active and available form is considered essential in order to inhibit the initiation and development of dental caries and possibly also the formation of dental plaque. The interest in fluoride dentifrices is based on two important facts: most people in industrialized countries regularly use a dentifrice and topical applications of fluo ride have been demonstrated to have a car ies-preventive effect.
