Almost 11% of the 400 unidentified specimens of South American Lobelioideae (Campanulaceae) examined recently cannot be equated with any known species. They are described here as 17 new species: 6 of Burmeistera, 6 of Centropogon, and 5 of Siphocampylus. Several are characterized by morphological characters or combinations of characters that are unique or unusual in their respective genera or in the subfamily as a whole. Six of the novelties are endemic to Ecuador, four to Peru7 three each to Venezuela and Colombia, and one to Bolivia.
