Quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for nitrogen and phosphorus content in barley were examined in 79 chromosome-doubled haploid (DH) lines derived from the F1-generation. Yield and concentration of nitrogen and phosphorus in grain and straw were recorded in a field trial with and without N-fertiliser application.
The position of QTLs for recorded traits and for agronomic traits derived from the recorded traits were estimated using an 85-point linkage map. Highly significant QTLs effects were found for all traits except for the total quantity of nitrogen in grain and straw. QTLs for different traits were clustered especially in two regions on chromosome 2. The QTLs in the region around locus v (two-rowed/six-rowed) on chromosome 2 may be caused by pleiotropic effects of the locus v. One or two QTLs for nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations in grain and straw explained from 15 to 45% of the variation among DH lines. Interactions were found between locus v on chromosome 2 and loci on chromosomes 2 and 4 for nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations in grain and straw. Within the two-rowed and six-rowed DH lines a large part of the variation for N and P concentrations in straw and grain was explained by different QTLs.
