Stackhouse assigned three species to the genus Chorda, namely Fucusfilum L., Fucusfiliformis Lightfoot and his own Fucus thrix. Stackhouse himself queried the allocation of F. filiformis Lightf. to the genus and in his errata deleted the species from association with Fucusfilum: he listed it as a synonym of Fucus confervoides L. in a later section of the same work (1801). Fucus confervoides L. was eventually transferred to Gracilaria by Greville (1830). Greville's illustration of Gracilaria is of G. erecta (Grey.) Grev., but his conception of the genus tallies with that of Stackhouse (1801) in the latter author's illustration of F. confervoides (tab. xv). Stackhouse was, however, almost certainly wrong in listing F. filiformis Lightf. as a synonym of F. confervoides L. In the Lightfoot herbarium, now housed in the Kew Herbarium, there is no specimen labelled directly as Fucus filiformis, but on three separate sheets labelled Fucus flagelliformis he has written'my F. filiformis'. These all appear to be specimens of what is now known as Chordaria flagelliformis (OF Miill.) C. Ag. and cannot be identified with
