Biopsy of conjunctival goblet cells was carried out by pressing a piece of Millipore filter on the conjunctival surface [human]. This was stained with PAS [periodic acid-Schiff] and hematoxylin and observed under the microscope after the filter was cleared with oil. Either spots of mucous corresponding to the openings of the goblet cells were seen, or the filter adhered to the surface and pulled off 1 or more layers of epithelial and globlet cells. The procedure was carried out on the unanesthetized eye and did not cause discomfort.
