CLARK, EVE V. Here's the "Top": Nonlinguistic Strategies in the Acquisition of Orientational Terms, CmLD DEVELOPMENT, 1980, 51, 829-338. The present study examines the role of nonlinguistic strategies in the acquisition of top, bottom, front, and back. The results of 3 comprehension experiments with children aged 1-6 to 5-0, using both featured and unfeatured objects, suggest that children go through 3 initial stages. At first, relying on nonlinguistic strategies, they get only top correct, then get both top and bottom correct, and finally master front and back as well. This sequence follows from children's a priori conceptual preferences and shows that they master the meanings of these terms in an order determined by their earlier nonlinguistic strategies.
