In rats with implanted lateral hypothalamic electrodes which elicited feeding as well as self-stimulation, subcutaneous insulin injections increased self-stimulation, and glucagon decreased it. A decrease in self-stimulation rate was also obtained when a mock injection followed the series of glucagon injections, indicating a conditioning effect. It is concluded that pancreatic hormones which control blood sugar can influence lateral hypothalamic reward.
