Reviews data on the brainstem auditory evoked response (BAER) as applied to the study of auditory development, focusing on 3 areas: age dependence of response parameters (amplitude, amplitude ratios, latencies, and interpeak latencies), the effect of stimulus variables (eg, rate, intensity, duration, rise–fall times, spectrum, masking) on these parameters, and developmental/maturational aspects of the BAER.
