This paper is intended to give new insights into a recent technique of local and data-dependent signal decomposition, referred to as “Empirical Mode Decomposition” (EMD). The study relies heavily on numerical simulations which allow for evidencing typical characteristics of the method and for quantifying performance in simple well-controlled situations. A spectral interpretation of EMD is given, and emphasis is put on its similarities and differences with wavelet-based multiresolution decomposition techniques.
