In this issue, which honours Dr Saul Roseman, it is timely to credit his seminal contribution to our views concerning the biological roles of cell surface complex carbohydrates. In his landmark review (Roseman, 1970), he presented a sweeping perspective of glycoconjugate structure, metabolism and function, concluding with the hypothesis that specific proteincarbohydrate and/or carbohydrate—carbohydrate interactions mediate cell—cell recognition. In the intervening years, this vision has been realized with the description of vertebrate lectins as mediators of cell surface molecular interactions (Sharon and Lis, 1989), as well as carbohydrate—carbohydrate recognition between apposing cells (Eggens etal., 1989; Kojima and Hakomori, 1989). Dr Roseman's insight and devotion to rigorous quantitative biochemistry and cell biology laid a firm foundation for the ensuing exploration of cell surface carbohydrate function. This review addresses the varied biological roles of one major class of complex carbohydrates, glycosphingolipids, in physiological and pathological cell surface interactions.
