Photosynthetic sulfur bacteria (Chromatiaceae and Chlorobiaceae) living in the same water body compete for available light. In Siso lake, a small anoxic holomictic lake near to Banyoles (Girona, Spain), the competitive balance changes seasonally depending on physicochemical gradients and light. Maximum total numbers of both groups of bacteria are complementary throughout the year. In summer time, the presence of motile Chromatium plates near the surface act as a biological light filter on the Chlorobium populations growing below. The latter adapt to the modified light spectrum and intensity by increasing both the specific pigment content and the carotenoid/bacteriochlorophyll ratio.
