The formation of taurine, starting from the sulfate of the embryonic egg, is studied with the aid of S35 sulfate. The following reactions occur (1) reduction of sulfate to sulfite; (2) fixation of the sulfite on a tricarbon chain with an amino group, resulting from the desulfhydration of cysteine, which leads to the formation of L-cysteic acid; (3) decarboxylation of the L-cysteic acid. Reaction (1) takes place solely in the vitelline chamber cells; reaction (2) in the yolk; reaction (3) in the embryo and yolk. The decarboxylase acting on the L-cysteic acid is a specific enzyme, the action of which is inhibited by cysteine-sulfinic acid.
