Assays for the initial evaluation of hemostasis are used to help determine whether the patient has any evidence of a clinically significant acquired or hereditary deficiency of coagulation factors most often in patients that are bleeding, prior to invasive procedures or prior to starting anti‐thrombotic medications. The initial evaluation includes measurement of the prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), fibrinogen, thrombin time, and whole blood viscoelastic assays for the rapid evaluation of hemostasis during surgery. This chapter helps the reader determine the type of testing that may be most useful, then provides a detailed review of instrument‐reagent selection for each of the tests mentioned above followed by a summary of the minimum evaluation steps that are recommended for each test.
