I. GENERAL DISTRIBUTION The infection of man with both Schistosoma haematobium and S. mansoni is widespread in two of the three regions of Nigeria and less so in the third, and records of its existence go back well into the last century. As long ago as 1881 a German traveller, Gustav Nachtigal, commented on the high incidence of haematuria in Bornu Province. Blair (1956) states that its existence in the Northern Region has been known since antiquity, and he quotes a local legend to the effect that the invading Fulani brought the disease with them from the upper Nile valley. He also describes the distribution of S. haematobium as being almost universal in the north and patchy elsewhere, though locally it may be heavy or hyperendemic; the clinical intensity of the infection he considers to be generally rather mild.
