The ♂ Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann), produces 3 distinctly different sounds prior to a successful mating. The first produced is a continuous calling sound of very low amplitude. The second is produced simultaneously with the calling, but in a series of pulses and pulse trains and is much greater in amplitude than the calling. The third sound is a series of pulses, made by the ♀ after he mounts the ♂ prior to copulation. The mean fundamental frequency of the calling sound is 353 Hz, the second is 165 Hz with a mean pulse train duration of 180 mS, and the third sound has a mean fundamental frequency of 185 Hz with a mean duration of 1,133 mS.
