In normal females and in stilbestrol-pretreated males infusion of arginine monochloride was followed consistently by a significant rise in plasma human growth hormone. The plasma levels attained were comparable to those achieved after insulin-induced hypoglycemia. The infusion was entirely without side effects in a large personal experience, and proved a useful tool in the investigation of suspected hypothalamicopituitary disorders. Certain reservations concerning interpretation of a negative response (such as failure to observe an increment in plasma growth hormone) are expressed.
