Abstract At the beginning of the 1970s comprehensive and systematic research on prehistoric Scandinavian music was started, by the author, under the term archaeomusicology. Hitherto this research has been concentrated on the search for concrete evidence of music and sound in prehistoric Scandinavia. The present article briefly introduces methods, problems and analytical aids connected with the gathering, evaluation and interpretation of the source material for Nordic archaeomusicology. Furthermore, the article contains a collation and discussion of the types of pre‐historical musical instruments or sound‐producing devices found in Scandinavia.
