In this issue ofCell Host & Microbe, Li et al. unveil an association between HLA-B∗46:01 and HIV disease progression in Asian populations. The distinct natural killer (NK) cell signature identified in individuals carrying HLA-B∗46:01 strongly suggests that NK cell inhibition plays a role in loss of HIV control.
