2016 was an exceptionally bright year in the history of artificial intelligence. This year, Google’s DeepMind team developed the Go-playing program AlphaGo that defeated top human players for the first time, which would not have been possible without the contributions of AI technology such as deep learning and reinforcement learning. The following year, AlphaGo swept almost every top human player on multiple occasions, and the era of human rule in Go completely ended. Another robot program, Libratus, beat top human players in a Texas Hold’em game. This was the first time that robots have defeated humans in a game of incomplete information. These events mark the rise of machine intelligence, and human society is gradually entering the era of intelligent machines. It will become increasingly common for machines to assist or even replace humans for various decisions.
